"Please."
One simple word, laden with emotion. Severus took a deep breath and opened his eyes. He was standing outside the Potter's house in Godric's Hollow, having just apparated there. But still he didn't bring his eyes to appraise the destruction that would surely be there. He looked up at the starry sky, wishing with all of his, broken, splintered heart that he was wrong. He wondered how the stars could still shine on such a dark event. He wished that everything would be Ok, and the only true friend he'd ever had would remain his friend - forever. He wished that he could go back in time and put everything right.

Finally, he knew he had to look. He turned slowly on the spot and look at the Potter's house.

-Or rather, where the Potter's house had once stood.

One side of the small house was slumping helplessly, almost completely crushed. The front of the house was littered with rubble and dust still hung thickly in the air.

Severus knew right then, it was hopeless wishing.  He could tell she was gone just by looking at the destroyed house in front of him. Her dazzling, beautiful presence was no longer emanating from this place. He knew her green eyes would never sparkle again, and yet he was still pushing open the gate with a barely audible creak and walking up the path. He could not stop his feet taking him through the front door and into the barely standing house. He knew it was stupid and useless.... dangerous, even. But right now, he no longer cared for his own life or his own safety, because the world had lost more than just a human life tonight. The world had lost the beauty that kept him here.

Still, his feet carried him through the house. Some isolated part of his mind noted a comfortable decor, delicate patterned wallpaper. As he mounted the creaking stairs of the house, he even thought he smelt Lily's perfume for the first time in months... years, even.

Then, he reached the landing... and stopped. When he had arrived here, he had forgotten that Lily was not the only casualty tonight. The evidence was laid, silent for once, in front of him. Severus found himself thinking that he would endure thousands of snide teasing remarks from James Potter, if only he could go back in time, if only Potters' wife was alive and breathing. If that heart still beat, he would do anything.

Anything.

But the hazel eyes of James Potter stayed closed, just as they would be from now on. Severus could see no wand anywhere... had the idiot really thought he could keep The Dark Lord away with no wand?
Normally, Severus would have scoffed, or laughed at Potter's stupidity. But, right now, he though he would never laugh again.

He tore his eyes from the limp body of his former enemy, and stepped bravely forward until he was just 3 steps away from the doorway of the master bedroom. In just 3 steps, he would know for sure. He would see the emptiness in her eyes for himself. He would be totally broken.

One Step. This side of the house was the weakest, the most ruined. The floor under him creaked ominously, but he didn't care.

Two Steps. A small, pitiful noise broke the endless silence of the house. Severus' heart leapt. The house was not totally dead, after all... could it be...?

Three Steps. Severus took the one last step into the room and his eyes seemed to take it all in at once. The roof sagged above, looking as if just a cough would stir the room enough for it to collapse. Whimpering and crying in the cot in the corner of the room, a boy was curled helplessly. Dark curls fell into the boy's tired, closed eyes as he moaned for his mother...

...Who laid on the floor beside the cot. Lifeless. The stunning, startling green eyes were wide and staring, with not a hint of emotion shown in their depths.
His mouth opened, but no sounds came out. He knew begging her to look at him once more would be useless, because she was not here to hear him.

Lily Evans, the girl he had always loved and always would love, was gone. He wasn't sure what even held him here... no job, no amount of money, no 'friends' could make up for what he had lost tonight.

He took the remaining steps over to the lifeless form on the floor and took her in his arms. At once, he was crying, sobs shaking his body mercilessly as he crushed her to his chest, stroking her fiery hair almost desperately.
"Please, please, no..." he murmured into her shoulder, as if hoping his heartbroken voice could breath life back into her.

He didn't know how long he sat there with her, but eventually, he came to his senses.

He knew that Dumbledore or someone would be here soon... he was surprised they weren't already. He had to leave. No-one could know how much pain he felt now... surely no-one would understand how much emotion crashed around him now, threatening to crush him.
He wished it would.

The boy in the cot whimpered again. He let her go, closing her eyes with the lightest of touches, trying to memorise her delicate face shape, her beautiful shade of red hair, her thick eyelashes against her cheeks.

All at once, he knew three things.

One. The world had changed tonight. Forever. But Lily's son still lived, crying alone in his cot.

Two. There was no cure for the unforgivable curse that had been used tonight.

Three. There was no cure for heartbreak.
My contest submission for the 'Tribute to the Fallen' contest, in the :iconharry-potter-club: group.

I cried when I read about Severus.... (But really, who didn't?)

This storyline was so sad... but I love it.
